[...] Yesterday, I wrote about the motives that may have pushed Adobe to publish a beta version of Photoshop CS3. Sure enough, I almost immediately got a response from someone claiming to be an Adobe employee. In this case, finding the post may have been easier since my post was mentioned on digg. It is therefore possible, and even likely, that this particular Adobe employee just stumbled upon the article while looking for technology news. Even so, the fact is that he took time to write a post and tried to diffuse some of my speculations by stating Adobe’s position. [...]

I think Photoshop is a toughter target than Premiere was. Premiere was, from everything I have read and remember, absolutely awful. I remember seeing someone's video edited on Premiere where the lip synch was off so badly it was distracting and horrible.

That being said, Photoshop has always struck me as a powerful program that's fiendishly difficult to learn and master. I found Final Cut Pro and even After Effects much easier to learn. If Apple can sprinkle some of that ease of use magic on the very difficult subject of image editing, all the better.

I think the reason for the issuance of the beta is just what it was said to be: To quiet disgruntled users who really need the Intel support badly. So they gain some always needed good will and it really doesn't cost them a lot.

I would LOVE to see Apple obliterate Photoshop, just like FCP destroyed Premiere, and Preview COULD destroy Acrobat with a wee bit of work (certainly, Preview's performance is already way superior). Adobe has a bad attitude; they suck up to Redmond instead of doing what is best for their customers-- encouraging them to use Macs.

Hi, Photoshop engineer Scott Byer had word on the motivation yesterday:
http://blogs.adobe.com/scottbyer/2006/12/beta.html

The gap between hardware cycles and software cycles is catching people pretty hard this time, and the upcoming releases are close enough to be able to help out. There's still a lot of work to do before Photoshop CS3 is really finished, but the millions of people using the new hardware can now start saving time.

(Lightroom and Soundbooth are different; both are in early exploratory stage, and we're seeking customer guidance on how they should evolve into 1.0.)
